3/14/2009 Transfer to Tortuguero, Laguna Lodge

Check out nice and smooth.  We will return to this hotel at the end of our trip.  A pool would make it perfect!  Very charming.  Lovely staff.  Today we head to Laguna Lodge/Tortuguero.  Our pick up is 6:15 am.  Our driver is Victor and our guide is Judy.  We pick up others.  Costa Rica is known for bananas, pineapple, and coffee.  We drive past some nice scenery-Yellow (from sulfur deposits)  volcanic Rio Sucio, Braulio Carrillo National Park.

Stop for breakfast at Selva Tropical Restaurant.  We have scrambled eggs, sausages which are really hot dog slices in Campbell's beans sauce, beans, mantioch.  Juice and coffee.  Fresh fruit-watermelon, bananas, guava.  Attached to the restaurant is a butterfly garden that we walk through.

Breakfast

Back on the road driving through banana plantations.  We finally arrive at the dock, Cano Blanco.  Now we take a boat to Laguna Lodge passing the Tortuguero canals.  Spot caiman, turtle, white egret.  Could hear howler monkeys.

Upon arrival Laguna Lodge we are greeted with a welcome drink and a cold towel.  Very refreshing.  We are given room 2 which is fine.  No bathtub-a shower.  No A/C-a fan. It is hot and sunny.  Lunch is at the lodge.  There's a salad bar, chicken, potatoes, steamed vegetables of carrots/green beans/cauliflower.  Spent some time in the pool.  Lovely.  At the lodge's gift shop I bought a T shirt and a postcard for 8260.00 colones.

At 3:00 pm we meet to take a boat ride to Tortuguero town.  Walked on the beach over to the Turtle Conservation Center.  I bought a few postcards.  Walked back to town where I stopped at Paraiso Gift Shop to get a wooden turtle puzzle for my grandson and a turtle T shirt for him.

Arriving back to our lodge

Back at the lodge some pool time, walk to the beach where we saw a crab.  Then it's back to our room to shower and dress for dinner at 7:00 pm.

Dinner is sea bass.  Mine is lightly breaded while Richard has his grilled.  Mashed potatoes, carrots and green beans.  Salad bar.  Lemonade was so good.  Dessert-coconut flan.  Everything was wonderful.  I don't know why I have no pictures of dinner!

A great day but tomorrow we will really explore the wildlife of Tortuguero National Park via boat.
