3/29/2009 Manuel Antonio, scuba dive Oceans Unlimited, Manuel Antonio National Park, sunset Playa Espadilla, dinner at Barba Roja

Another restless night.  Pillows not so comfortable.  Up around 5:30 am.  Breakfast buffet.  I have scrambled eggs, hash browns, pancakes, toast, fruit.  Richard has gallo pinto/rice and beans, cereal, toast.  Orange juice, coffee.

Richard has his dive gear all together in his dive bag.  He's picked up at 7:30 am.  Oceans Unlimited have sent a taxi to get him.  This will be a 2 tank dive like the one he did in Ocotal.  I intend to spend the time while he's gone at the pool.  Before I know it he's returning.  He had a nice time.  His first dive was Isla Larga Sur/Long Island.  Water temp was 78˚F, depth 60', 2 safety stops, total bottom time 49 minutes.  He saw green sea turtle, dolphins, parrot fish, scorpion fish.  His second dive was Acuario/starfish garden.  Depth 50', 2 safety stops, total bottom time 38 minutes.  He saw starfish, octopus, angel fish.

I have arranged for us to hike/visit Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio.  It was named for a Spanish conquistador and is flanked by the ocean and forested hills.  It is the smallest in Costa Rica's park system.  It has remarkable biodiversity with abundant wildlife and lovely beaches.  Often there are sightings of coatis, sloths, toucans, scarlet macaws.  One of the most visited parks in the country.  Well maintained trails.  Daily number of visits are limited.  We are picked up at 12:45 pm by Iguana Tours.  Driver Miguel, guide Mauricio.  We saw white face monkeys, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, 2 and 3 toed sloths-even babies, iguana, Jesus Christ lizard, stick bird, eagle, other birds.  The scenery is lovely as is the beach.  After 2 hours of hiking we stop at the Marlin Restaurant outside the park for passion fruit juice and fruit-banana, pineapple, and watermelon which was included in our tour.  We had a nice afternoon.

We spend the rest of the day at the pool.  We've decided to drive to Playa Espadilla for the sunset.  Arriving we pay $2.00 USD for parking the car.  The beach is lovely.  Some folks are in the water.  Others like us are here to see the sunset which is so beautiful.  Lots of vendors here.  I bought a tote, some postcards, and a pretty hair band.

Dinner is at Barba Roja.  I have the red snapper with rice and vegetables-carrots/green beans/onion/cucumber.  Richard has the sea bass with shaved lime, ginger, and garlic.  It comes with the same sides-rice and vegetables.  Drinks are water for him and a fresca for me.  Cost without tip $33.85 USD.

Another end to a great day in Costa Rica!  Tomorrow is a big day.  Catamaran island cruise.
